Walking In a Winter Wonderland {Maniacal Mondays #6}

Now I haven’t done a Maniacal Monday in a bit and since it’s the end of the year I figured it would be fitting to end on a rather chaotic note. This post is more of a short and sweet winter montage during my time in college as not everything occurred on the same day or even the same year. But they’re good memories and happened during winter so I wanted to include them.

One of the things I enjoyed about college was at the end of the fall semester, all the trees on campus would be decorated with Christmas lights and everything would be so bright and colorful when nighttime came. It was cool.

During the time when it came to actually turning on all of the lights, the school usually puts on a big celebration and all that jazz where lots of people come to watch. One year, my roommate and I wanted to see all the trees across the school that night. The campus is big, so our plan was to start at the top then work our way down. So we start looking at all the pretty colors and head to the elevator to take us down to the next area.

Yeah, it didn’t go exactly as planned because well, the elevator was broken. Unfortunately, the old rickety elevator had grinded its last gear and went kaput. It was sad to see.

Nah, I’m just kidding. It didn’t meet its demise; the school just turned it off because of all the people and it’s technically for students and staff only.

I was hoping by the power of magic and determination that it would work for us, hence why I bypassed the tape roping off the walkway to the elevator. I didn’t pay attention to it, not even when my forehead smacked against it because I wasn’t short enough to fit underneath. I won’t say that I pulled a DW from Arthur for innocent’s sake.

DW meme from the kids' show Arthur. DW stops at Arthur's door which has a sign on it that reads, Arthur's room. DW not allowed." DW then proclaims, "That sign can't stop me because I can't read!"

Anyway, the elevator being off duty meant that we had to go down the other way, which was walking down the windy road and hope that we didn’t get accidentally run over by cars cosplaying as reindeer. Yes, they had wooden sidewalks to take, but they had small sets of stairs in between, so that was out of the question. And technically I sometimes consider myself a vehicle, so I mean, it kind of made sense to take the road.

Regardless, we made it down without getting hit so we continued on with our walk beneath the Christmas lights. We went past the football field and got to the parking lot as we walked with the massive crowd towards the front of the school. They were serving hot chocolate and cookies on the main campus, so of course we couldn’t pass that up, especially since it was super cold that night.

So we’re going across the lot and well, in my excitement I may or may not have turned too sharp, cutting off my friend in the process. It may or may not have led to me running directly over their foot with the big tire and nearly running over their boyfriend in the process as well. Don’t worry, they were okay! It just hurt quite a bit, but they have a ridiculously high pain tolerance, and they walked it off. Literally, because we still went all over campus to finish seeing the lights. We all laugh about it now, but yeah, I briefly lost control in the moment.

I’m a good driver, but I even make mistakes. Especially when excitement takes over because I suddenly turn into a Mario Kart driver with star power equipped. Basically, nothing can stop me in the moment. That last part wasn’t necessary, but it made me laugh to myself and I had to say it.

Once we’d seen all the lights and gotten our hot chocolate and cookies, we hung out for a bit before heading back to our dorm. The festival changed a lot, pretty much every year as far as booths, events, etc. went but it was always fun. I think my last year there we went to IHOP and had a late-night breakfast (the best kind in my opinion).

And although this didn’t happen during the lighting festival, it did snow once while I was there because it was freezing cold! My roommates and I played in the snow, eating snowflakes and chilling our fingers to the bone with every clump of snow we grabbed. Even though I had a thick sweater on, it was still too cold, and we didn’t want my clothes to get wet, so I had my rain poncho equipped which thankfully caught all the falling snow.

So there we have it! The final post before the end of 2022. Thank you, dear readers, for sticking around to read my silly posts, I really appreciate it.

Here’s to wishing everyone a happy new year. I hope you all remain safe and healthy. ~So Says The Disabled Dryad~
